So it's important not to confuse correlation with causation.
This is probably the question hiding underneath everything else.
If chess makes you smarter, shouldn't your IQ go up?
Not necessarily.
Research into chess training and general cognitive ability has produced mixed findings, and it's too simplistic to claim that playing chess automatically increases IQ.
Chess skill and intelligence aren't the same thing.
A strong chess player has developed an impressive collection of knowledge, patterns, strategies, and experience.

So if someone tells you:
“Play chess and your IQ will definitely increase.”
Take that claim with a grain of salt.
Chess is fascinating enough without turning it into a guaranteed intelligence hack.

Learning from mistakes — analyzing what went wrong after a loss.
But again, these aren't magical abilities that appear simply because you own a chessboard.
They are skills you repeatedly practice through the activity.
The more meaningful and challenging the practice, the more opportunity there is to develop them.
Now imagine Jack teaching chess to a child.
The child moves a knight.
“Why did you move it there?” Jack asks.

And perhaps that's the more interesting answer.
Chess doesn't necessarily make you smarter at everything.

“What happens next?”
